Gum Disease Treatment
Gum disease, which is also known as gingivitis or periodontitis in its more severe form, involves an infection and inflammation of the tissues surrounding teeth. Left untreated, gum disease can lead to major problems not only for your teeth, but for the rest of your health as well. Many patients with gum disease are too embarrassed to visit the dentist and this only exacerbates the problem.
Gum disease may be treated in your general dentist’s office, but patients often visit a periodontist. A periodontist has completed dental school, as well as an additional three years of training in the treatment of diseases which affect the gum. Periodontists are trained in surgical and non-surgical procedures to correct and prevent gum disease.
Recent advancements in laser periodontal surgery known as LANAP (laser-assisted new attachment procedure) has provided a more comfortable procedure and a quicker recovery time. This procedure uses a Periolase laser to destroy damaged gum tissue which can then be removed. The Periolase laser is also used to encourage the regrowth of healthy tissues and reattachment to the bone. LANAP requires a dentist to be trained and certified in the use of the Periolase laser. |
